Program Information

HUMA's Performance Program is for competitive swimmers aged 8 and up. There are five training squads which are structured to recognize progression in age and ability. Each squad has a specific training program designed for the needs of its swimmers.

The Program Focus:

  • developing and refining proper competitive swimming stroke techniques, starts and turns
  • establishing and maintaining a high level of fitness
  • improving strength, balance, coordination and general motor skills
  • teaching and internalizing goal-oriented achievements through discipline, perseverance and dedication
  • promoting teamwork and leadership skills

Swim Meets Expectations:

Competitions are usually held every Saturday, from the end of May to the Provincial Championships in mid-August, excluding most long weekends. Swim meets are great events for team bonding, socialization and making new friends.

  • Swimmers are strongly encouraged to attend at least four (4) meets per season
  • Competition is an important component in a swimmer's development
  • The HUMA Invitational Meet and Regionals are excellent meets to attend
  • Swimmers are expected to stay for the entire duration of a swim meet
  • Qualifying times are not required to attend seasonal meets
  • Qualifying is required to attend Provincials, based on results at Regionals
  • Failure to attend meets may affect an athlete's registration in the following season

Training Schedule and Location:

  • Throughout the season swimmers train in the West Pool, Van Vliet Centre, University of Alberta.
